Blue light is present both in sunlight, between the ultraviolet and visible spectrum, which is already harmful in itself, and in artificial light.It is present in LED lighting, in tablets and smartphones, which are now used very frequently by people of all ages, from children to elderly.
The main sources are basically LED lights which are extremely common.
In vitro tests have clearly shown that blue-violet light causes a detrimental impact on retinal cells, leading to their apoptosis in a very slow but progressive manner.
Prevention should be practiced since school age and then continue in adulthood, as well as in old age, for various reasons.
Nowadays, children and youth are using tablets and smartphones, for several hours a day, to work or study. We do not know their effects on the retina on the long term yet.
The fundamental concept is that blue light should be divided into two bands: blue-violet and blue-turquoise.
The main requirement for a lens is to cut blue-violet light, and not block the blue-turquoise one because it helps to regulate the sleep/awake cycle.
Therefore, by filtering blue-violet light we provide a safe way to protect our eyes. In addition, we have to consider not only direct light, but also passive and reflected lights. Thus, having lenses which protect from blue light radiations in outdoor and indoor conditions is even more advisable.
I believe that, in terms of prevention, it’s becoming essential to use protective lenses as a main solution, regardless of the eye defect. In my opinion, a clear lens such as Eye Protect System recently introduced by Essilor is without any doubt essential to provide an appropriate protection.
It can be an excellent help to complete the natural defense of our eyes over time, not an immediate disease but the one which is silent and subtle and only causes damages in the later stage of life.
